MIKE MCKNIGHT

  • After high school, he was a bit heavy.
    • He picked up running.
  • Once he did a half marathon, he realized he was a pretty good runner.
  • Mike suffered a broken back after a ski accident–following this, he really got into ultra running.
    • 3 weeks into his broken back with a body brace on, he went out and ran half a mile.
    • He felt bad, but it didn’t hurt, so he started running every day.
      • He recovered very quickly and began running 10+ miles every day.
        • Trail running really appealed to him and he got hooked.
  • He is also the winner of the Ultra Running Triple Crown: he had the fastest cumulative time over the Bigfoot 200, the Tahoe 200, and the Moab 240 in 2017.
    • In 2018, he actually won each race individually as well.
      • This was his breakout.
      • He ran just under 7 days.

FAT ADAPTED RUNNING

  • Mike recently ran 100 miles on zero calories.
      • This is ultimate fat adaptation-you can still eat fatty foods to run while fat adapted.
  • He originally started running fat-adapted because he had digestive issues while running doing anything else.
  • Mike usually only allows himself to eat in a 6 hour window each day.
  • The keto diet works very well for ultra athletes.
    • He is “bonk-proof” and has a strong stomach.
  • Mike eats a lot of meat and eggs, and before a race will also have an orange.
    • He makes sure he’s all stoked up on fat, and will have a TBS of coconut oil, too.
  • He also finds day-to-day benefits like mental clarity and healthy weight maintenance.

THE ANGRIEST TRAINER 336: ONE-ON-NONE

by Vinnie Tortorich

Thursday’s edition of The Angriest Trainer is usually a one-on-one with Vinnie and a guest. Well, fasten your seatbelts…today we have: no music, no lead-in, no “and now, America’s Angriest Trainer”, no ads and NO GUEST!  Zero. Vinnie is alone in front of the mic. Why? Because we lost a podcast. That’s right. We lost it. So while he was running today,  Vinnie realized “I can do this podcast myself, with no guest.”  Let’s see what happens…

  • Pure Vitamin Club
  • Amazon

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • Usually with a guest, we use 2 mics, and amazing Bill Meadows cleans up the audio and combines the two audio files into The Angriest Trainer Podcast…but we lost podcast!
  • When Vinnie still lived in Louisiana, he had a fitness show called “Talking Fitness” on WSMB AM in New Orleans. It was just Vinnie on a mic. Just like today.
  • His nephew, Mike Tortorich and his co-host, Joey Tortorich have a podcast, Dudes in a Room, Check out episode 096, “Je Suis Charlie” which is a “one-on-none” episode
  • Vinnie had been thinking about doing a one-on-none podcast …just like the good ol’ days

NARCISSISM

  • Ultra sports athletes are the most narcissistic people on the planet. Why? Because to do this sport you have to be selfish with your time
  • After years of competing, athletes start to connect with charities
  • It makes ultra athletes feel better about themselves; their time goes to helping other people
  • Vinnie thinks maybe his podcast helps people with advice, FAQ’s and his free newsletter

PODCAST CALLERS AND QUESTIONS

  • Olivia – Has famous parents, actor Jack Scalia and Miss Universe, Karen Baldwin. She had 3-4 calls with Vinnie to help her with injury…she’s back in shape and on NSNG
  • What should I eat on a daily basis? It’s not about being “carb-a-phobic”, it’s about seeing where grains and sugar sneak into your food so you can avoid glucose spike
  • What should I do about cravings? Yes, in the beginning, before you are fat adapted, there will be cravings. Comedian Bobby Kelly said it was easier getting off drugs than grains and sugar. Once you’re on the other side, it gets easy
  • What exercise should I do? Stick to one program for a period of time so you feel a sense of accomplishment. Use exercise to get in better shape, not for weight loss

BOOK #2

  • Sequel to Fitness Confidential
  • Dean Lorey and Vinnie are working on it together. Todd Farmer is doing research
  • Not so much of a memoir…focused on answering your questions
  • Due out middle of 2015

STARTING NEXT WEEK

  • New podcast on Wednesday with Vinnie and Andy Schreiber sponsored by Pure Vitamin Club
  • 5 minutes answering questions about health and fitness 5 minutes about things (like titanium dioxide) that are in vitamins and shouldn’t be there

Angriest Trainer 326: One-on-One Phil Maffetone

by Vinnie Tortorich

Our guest today is Phil Maffetone, originally from Brooklyn, and a track and field athlete in the 60’s. Vinnie and Anna discuss Phil’s book with him, “1:59“, and the concept of body efficiency.

Also, today, we’re going to Hollywood! The amazing Serena Scott Thomas is in Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie, “Inherent Vice” which opened last week. Vinnie discusses the movie and what it was like going to the premiere.  He also notices a strong resemble between actress Illeana Douglas who attended the premiere of “Inherent Vice” and actor/comedian Milton Berle…

Phil’s Book

  • “1:59” refers to the ability of a human being breaking the 2 hour mark running a marathon
  • It is considered “undoable”
  • The book is for everyone…cyclists, swimmers, triathletes

Body Efficiency

  • Our brain tries to move in the most economical way
  • The more efficient our body moves…the faster we perform using less energy and with less injuries
  • Ryan Hall had high hopes…great runner but not consistent
  • Phil says that he has an irregular gate, which is not efficient and slows him down

Breaking Records

  • In 1954 Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile and many people broke it soon after
  • Bob Beaman jumped further than any human being in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics
  • To achieve this, these need to be near-perfect performances
  • Humans are always improving..mental and physical part of us always wants to do better

How Does This Relate to Zone 2

  • Aerobic system is the key foundation of endurance competition
  • Equally important is diet
  • Junk food impairs aerobic ability
  • Get away from sugar and grains

Angriest Trainer 291: 1-on-1 with Chris Kostman

by Vinnie Tortorich

Chris Kostman is an ultra-athlete who holds the record, at age 20 in 1987, of being the youngest person to complete the eleven-day Race Across America. Chris is still running races and now produces events such as the Furnace Creek 508 (there is still time to sign up for this race) and the Badwater 135 through his company, AdventureCORPS. Vinnie and Chris discuss ultra sports, nutrition and following NSNG as a vegetarian.

Here are some of the highlights…

How Chris Started Cycling

  • Chris was on his third grade soccer team that never won a game
  • The coaches were constantly berating the players
  • His dad pulled him from the team and Chris never played a sport with a ball again
  • Years later he discovered cycling and developed as a cyclist and as a human being through positive reinforcement

This year’s Badwater 135

  • This year’s race included a 22 mile climb
  • Vinnie went to support Tony Portera who has been NSNG for 8 months and lost 45 pounds.
  • When Chris saw Tony at this year’s Badwater, he didn’t recognize him
  • Tony looked radically different; his body was reshaped

How to do NSNG as a Vegetarian

  • Chris has been a vegetarian for 25 years
  • He now eats cheese, fish and eggs
  • Feels a huge difference on NSNG
  • He has more energy and not hungry all the time

This year’s Furnace Creek 508 Bicycle Ride

  • Still time to sign up for this race
  • Different route this year because of a moratorium on sporting events in Death Valley National Park
  • The race starts in Reno, goes through the northern back country of Nevada, and finishes up in Reno
  • Elevation is challenging: you are never below 3,500 feet and often over 7,000 feet
