Angriest Trainer 228: Dr. Peter Attia

by Vinnie Tortorich

Jan012014

Peter Attia is the President and co-Founder of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI) who spent five years as a general surgery resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also describes himself as a “relentless self-experimenter,” who has spent the last few years obsessively reading everything on the science of nutrition and applying it to his own life.

In this episode we discuss…

  • Why carbohydrate reduction followed by carbohydrate restriction through a period of adaptation helped Dr. Attia reach his fitness goals after his metabolism slowed down
  • You need to eat to be healthy because not all elements of health can be seen in the mirror
  • There are slender people with metabolic syndrome
  • People who are really insulin sensitive tend to access fat as long as possible
  • Fat adaptation does not require ketosis
  • Maximal fat oxidation rate is an amazing metric of metabolic efficiency
  • If you don’t fix nutrition and sleep, you’re in for a world of pain

Metabolic syndrome is a clinical proxy involving 3-5 of the following:

  • Elevated glucose
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Elevated triglycerides
  • Elevated truncal girth
  • Depressed high density lipoprotein cholesterol

The five diseases that track with metabolic syndrome

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s
