Creating A Metabolic Storm

  • Vinnie asks Dr. Ben Bikman about GLP-1,  which are drugs used for weight loss, like Ozempic, Wegovy, etc. (4:00)
  • Dr. Bikman confirms that there are negative consequences that should be considered and that jumping on these drugs should be delayed. (6:30)
    • He’s not opposed, but he says the metabolism cannot be tricked.
    • The result of very high doses is the slow down of the intestines—food does not leave the stomach. (8:55)
    • These drugs can create a metabolic storm, especially in high doses.
  • He goes into clear detail and shares examples of fat and insulin resistance. (12:00)
  • But then getting back off the medication creates a “metabolic storm”.
  • Vinnie brings up weight loss and muscle loss when on those drugs. (15:30)
    • Dr. Bikman elaborates on muscle loss.
    • Trying to regain muscle is difficult, especially if you’re older.
    • It’s not just a matter of muscle—you must also keep bones strong. (21:45)
  • They discuss resistance training and repetition—it’s most effective to go to failure. (26:15)
  • Don’t worry about the calories, worry about insulin.
  • Focus on nourishing your body with proteins and fat—you do not need insulin spikes to grow muscle. (28:00)
    • Dr. Bikman makes a general recommendation for success in health and weight loss.

Are Calories a Thing?

  • They discuss the quality of calories, not just the quantity. (31:00)
  • Dr. Bikman elaborates on the two theories of obesity: the endocrine theory and the caloric theory.
    • Calories are a measure used in physics and don’t translate directly to biochemical science. (33:00)
  • The moment you spike insulin, you slow your metabolism and return to hunger earlier. (40:00)
  • Why is it that when protein raises insulin, it’s not a problem? (44:15)
    • Ben discusses the hormone glucagon and some recent research that is being done.
    • The results of this research are still pending, but Dr. Bikman has some suggestions.
  • Vinnie asks about the “dawn effect.” (48:00)
    • Ben describes the phenomenon and how it affects various issues like T1 and T2 diabetics.
    • He recommends that breakfast be a low-carb version. (52:00)
  • Vinnie has questions about sugar and fat cells, long-chain triglycerides, and if the amount of insulin matters. (53:00)
    • Ben describes how fat cells grow and the role of insulin in that process.
  • Dr. Bikman says most people could not get to 600 lbs; he explains why, and what differences can occur in genetics.
    • He describes the various ways that fat cells react, and how a person can develop things like fatty liver disease, fatty pancreatic disease, and more.
  • They agree that all of it can be changed through lifestyle and nutrition. (1:02:00)
    • Ben says low-calorie, low-fat is not the answer—your first step should be a low-insulin step.
    • Once you reach a certain goal, you can try intermittent fasting, but then plan properly.
  • Vinnie adds that it is important to stay out of a “diet mentality.”

Vinnie shares an update to his website that you’ll want to check out: a VIP section! Go to vinnietororich.com/VIP for more information.

NINA TEICHOLZ

  • Investigative journalist.
  • Friend of Gary Taubes, as is Vinnie.
  • Believes in a low carb diet!
    • Before going to LCHF, she had bone spurs and sinus infections.
      • She realized this SAD was not the right diet.
  • Incredibly educated, amazing woman.
    •  A number of books and decades of research.
  • Suppression of the science is why the Standard American Diet prevails.
    • Studies that PROVED Low Carb was GOOD were hidden by those in charge.
  • 7 Country study which “proved” low fat is good was a false, BS study.
  • British Medical Journal backs Nina’s findings.
  • Hears of plenty of situations Diabetes Association/Heart Association threaten LCHF Scientists with revocation of licenses if they teach NSNG.
    • “inappropriately reversed diabetes.”
    • She covered and was involved with the trial involving Dr. Noakes.

PLANT BULLIES

  • People on plant based diets also largely misinformed.
    • Additionally, they often defend their way of eating to the death.
  • For example, Nina has a friend who has fatty liver disease.
    • This is because she largely eats plant based smoothies.

STAYING IN REMISSION

  • Vinnie had cancer 14 years ago.
  • They told him it would come back.
  • It hasn’t!
  • Vinnie credits this largely to his avoiding sugar, which feeds cancer.

NSNG® VS. KETO

  • When Vinnie was a trainer, his clients weren’t keto.
  • They cut out sugar, grains, starches, and seed oils.
  • It wasn’t enough to call it dietary ketosis.
  • However, they were metabolically flexible.
  • You can just do strict NSNG® and not keto and still lose lots of weight.
  • Vinnie does think some people would benefit more from being in strict keto.
    • Those with CPAP machines, those who are pre-diabetic, etc., may want to consider keto.

BEST OF: The Cholesterol Conundrum with Ivor Cummins – Episode 1567

by Vinnie Tortorich

Episode 1567 – Nearly one thousand episodes ago, Ivor Cummins, a biochemical engineer, went into detail about the Cholesterol Conundrum. Modern research has clearly proven that the root cause of arterial plaque is insulin resistance, most likely caused by high amounts of carbohydrates, not high cholesterol or high fat. Listen here, on this Best Of podcast!

IVOR CUMMINS

  • The Cholesterol Conundrum video can be found here.
  • He is a chemical engineer.
  • Originally, he was told he had to cut down his cholesterol.
    • He didn’t just listen to the doctor.
    • He dug down the rabbit hole and DID NOT lower cholesterol.
  • Ivor ails from Dublin, Ireland.

CHOLESTEROL CONUNDRUM

  • His cholesterol was a bit high.
  • Liver enzymes (GGT and serum ferritin) were INCREDIBLY high .
    • He asked the doctors what this meant & asked them what to do.
      • They came back with very weak and unsure answers.
      • Because of his science background & his family, he did not accept this answer.
        • He values his health and this was not enough.
          • He started researching after visiting 3 unsure doctors.
  • Once he started researching, he found that very high GGT meant a reduced lifespan.
    • GGT = Gamma glutamyl transferase.
    • High levels = high inflammation in the liver.
      • The liver has SO many functions, including making cholesterol.
    • Excessive alcohol raises this, but he does not drink a lot.
    • He found that high levels are associated with Fatty-liver disease which comes from eating too many carbs.
      • Around 30% of adults have fatty liver disease.
        • Carbs, sugar, and insulin resistance are the problem .
  • Serum ferritin is a marker for metabolic syndrome.
    • His was so high because he had been eating carbs and sugar & had this disease.
  • Ivor’s diet at the time:
    • Quite a bit of pasta, bread, rice;
    • Tried to not eat fat;
    • He basically ate what the governments (incorrectly) press one to eat;
    • Although for the most part he followed the “food pyramid” he always ate butter instead of margarine.
  • More and more research showing that those who have high cholesterol are super sensitive to carbs.
  • Vitamins are important to regulate all these as wells.

IMPORTANT VITAMINS

  • 70-80% of people are deficient in magnesium.
    • Check out PVC broad spectrum magnesium!
  • People are deficient in K2 (those who eat low fat especially).
  • Vitamin D and sun exposure are very important as well.
    • It’s important for fitness and cardiovascular health.
    • Disease conditions can drive Vitamin D even lower.
    • Blood pressure drops with good Vitamin D/sun exposure.
    • Arteries relax.
    • Sun Exposure increases vasodilation.
    • Normal sun is more important than Vitamin D pills, but if you can’t get out in the sun, do take a Vitamin D supplement.
    • Sun-related dangers are so so insignificant compared to the danger of cars etc.
      • Also most sun-damage is fixable (melanoma is the bad one, though).
        • You are LESS likely to have melanoma with MORE general sun exposure.
          • Ex: outdoor workers have not increased melanoma like indoor workers in the last 40 years.
