STATINS AND CHOLESTEROL

  • Vinnie welcomes Dr. Nadir Ali back as a guest and they start by chatting a bit about Dr. Ali’s focus on educational events, quality cholesterol, and living a “non-prescription lifestyle.” (2:35)
  • They also discuss how several doctors’ or writers’ careers have been limited, or even stopped, when they have tried to educate with the truth. (5:45)
    • Maryanne Demasi from Australia is an example; Vinnie explains who she is.
    • Also, both Gary Fettke and Tim Noakes have been targeted previously.
    • The limitations on certain freedoms and access to information are concerning.
  • The conversation leads to the use of statins. (12:07)
    • Vinnie relays info from a consult he had and why he advised the person to find a different doctor.
    • Dr. Ali goes into detail about when things like statins and CAC scans can be useful, and when they are unnecessary.
    • For a doctor to just give you a statin and tell you it’s good for you is not great; there are instances where a statin helps, and when they do not.
    • He also goes into detail about genetic factors like PCSK-9, and how it makes a difference in cholesterol levels. (20:30)
  • Vinnie asks about the carnivore diet and whether it’s a good idea for cholesterol. (23:00)
    • There are plenty of good reasons to eat meat.
    • There is potential for lipotoxicity in some people; Dr. Ali explains. (25:10)
      • There needs to be an individualized approach; as a result, it may be better to transition in stages.

HIJACKING YOUR BRAIN

  • They switch to talking about how to get people to change their habits, as everyone always wants a “magic bullet”. (31:00)
  • Dr. Ali goes into how he and his colleagues have come up with tricks and hacks to help people improve their habits. (31:30)
    • Dr. Ali goes into detail about the “dopamine spike effect.” (32:10)
      • He describes studies that show the anticipation of the reward is what spikes the dopamine, NOT the reward itself.
      • He also talks about how food engineering has manipulated our brains to want to eat more, especially things like sugars.
  • Vinnie and Dr. Ali discuss addiction, and willpower vs. changing your environment. (37:00)
  • They discuss how to get someone who is less disciplined to be able to change habits. (47:10)
  • Dr. Ali describes a study that shows how random rewards affect dopamine, anticipation, and behavior. (50:50)
    • The same behavior modification is used in Vegas on slot machines.
    • The food industry uses a similar effect to hijack your brain by modifying food to trigger addiction and purchasing patterns.
  • This leads the conversation to today’s tech, algorithms, and the challenge of addiction in that area. (54:00)
    • Vinnie tells Dr. Ali about what he observed with a young man at the gym.
    • Dr. Ali mentions how he has changed his environment to change his patterns.
    • For all the benefits of tech, there is a detrimental side. (59:00)
  • Dr. Ali can be found at alicardiology.com; on youtube at eatmostlyfats;  and in his Low Carb Denver talk.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION PROGRESS

  • Anna and Vinnie like to check in for the first couple months of each year to talk continued New Years resolutions work.
  • If you’ve fallen off, get right back on!
  • You don’t need to do everything at once…things take time to change.
    • If you aren’t losing weight yet, stick with it for 30-60 days, and then try to figure out what could be causing stalling.
  • If you don’t exercise yet, that’s okay, ease into it.
    • Go slow, and then go a bit slower.
    • However you need to exercise is great.
  • Keep cooking your own food — stick to the stovetop recipes.
    • Anna has tons of super easy and quick recipes in her cookbooks, Eat Happy and Eat Happy Too.
  • Don’t let yourself off the hook now.
  • Put some fat with your veggies, they will taste better!

COVID-19 COMORBIDITIES

  • Many comorbidities around bad eating exist.
    • Type 2 Diabetes and morbid obesity are big comorbidities.
  • Lowering inflammation is, at the least, a good thing.
  • Make sure you communicate with your family or spouse or friends about medical directives.
  • You may need someone advocating for you in the hospital.
  • They can advocate for you to have fewer carbs and staying in keto.
    • This *could* help fight the virus…

THE CARNIVORE UPDATE

  • Anna was, as of this recording, 14 days into her carnivore diet.
  • So far, it’s going well.
  • Anna is feeling good and enjoying it.
  • She’s in ketosis!
  • Recently, she added a bit of non-dairy into her coffee.
    • Otherwise, all she eats is meat and coffee.

KETO CARNIVORISM

  • L. Amber O’Hearn is a data scientist from Canada.
  • When she came to America, she fiddled with diet to figure out what was best for her physical and mental health.
    • Originally standard for vanity – vegetarianism was not working, nor was aerobics.
      • This was around 1997.
  • Check out her presentation here:
  • Amber has been on the carnivore diet for 10 years now.
    • She is an original!
    • After her pregnancies, she gained weight on ‘garden variety’ keto diet, so decided to switch things up.
    • The weight dropped off immediately, and it helped her mood, too.
  • Steak is a staple.
  • Her first meal is usually between 11 and 1. It’ll be eggs, a steak, chicken thighs, duck breast, ribs, a burger, or something like this.
    • She also eats lots of fish.
    • There’s a lot of variety!
  • Sometimes, she will do what she calls a “Ribeye Reset.”
    • If she isn’t feeling great, or feels like she’s stalling, she will only eat ribeye for a few days.

  • Jeff doesn’t necessarily do NSNG®
    • He is a low-carber
  • Doesn’t know Vinnie super well
  • He is 47, 5’11.5″, and weights 314 now
    • In 2001, he weighted 679 lbs
    • Obviously still has a ways to go
  • Jeff was a chubby kid, and got fat fairly quickly
    • Played football and other sports
    • In 8th grade he was 275 lbs
      • Heavy-weight wrestler
    • Fairly active as a kid and teen
  • Once he lost a good amount of weight, he looked in the mirror and didn’t know who was looking back
    • Hard to explain, totally mind-boggling
    • Looks like “a fit dude spreading out of a fat person”
      • Still doesn’t feel that he looks like him
  • When he lost a lot of weight, his marriage did come to an end
    • He freaked out, and got some wandering eyes from new attention
  • Found someone else that is also trying to lose weight
    • They get to go through this journey together
  • When he started his serious weight loss, he cut out some bread and other stuff
    • Lost about 200 lbs
      • Then got serious about low carb/keto and felt better and lost more
  •  In 2001 he had gastric bypass
    • Got back up to 600+ lbs after this surgery
  • Carnivore diet appealed to him
    • “Biggest bang for my buck”
      • Feel that he’s lost 80-100 lbs this way
