BETHANY MCKENZIE

  • Bethany has been on the show before.
  • She also was in Vinnie’s documentary.
  • You heard her talking about changing her Type 1 diabetic child’s life for the better with diet.
  • People at first thought she was a little bit of a crazy mom, but now her kid is so insanely healthy and athletic that she’s showed how this lifestyle works.
  • She’s always trusted doctors, so the moment when she realized her diet wasn’t good for her child (or for her) blew her mind quite a bit.
    • Her husband is a doctor, after all!
      • He’s endorsed this wholeheartedly, too, though.
  • Check out her foundation’s website here, too.

A DIABETES SOLUTION

  • She is very proud of her documentary.
  • It is set for release on October 1st.
  • The documentary focuses on treatment of children with Type 1 diabetes.
    • She wants families to be able to make an educated dietary choice for their kids.
  • They started with their own funding, then supplemented to make it the best film they could.
  • The doc’s  Indiegogo page can be found here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/madness-the-cost-of-carbs-a-documentary#/faq
  • We’re calling it A Diabetes Solution because it’s a message full of hope.
  • Her son is a healthy athlete eating lots of meats and veggies and real food.
  • He’s no longer bogged down with carb spikes and the junk.
    • Brittany really believes if she could cook for people herself and show them, they’d be as content.
  • She now uses generic insulin for him when he needs it –– it’s different now.
    • Spikes are much slower, so he doesn’t need fast acting expensive insulin anymore.
    • He’ll always need insulin but it’s more manageable.

KEEPING ON GOOD WEIGHT

  • Nick has been a Type 1 diabetic for over 20 years
  • Grew up eating a diet that resembled NSNG
  • Actually at a point where he tries to gain weight
  • When he eats sugar and grains, he loses weight
  • He needs to increase his fats
    • Avocado, eggs
  • Increase protein and workouts
  • He has to balance protein intake before during and after workout to make it have an effect
  • Insulin pump has to go into fat areas
    • He has trouble finding them – sometimes has to give his body a break
    • Prefers pump over injections
  • Put on three or four lasting pounds in a couple of weeks
    • Increase in protein made a big difference
  • Still feeling a bit fatigued — likely should up fats a little, may get better when more fat-adapted
  • Even though he’s always trim, he feels the difference when he’s being healthy or not
    • Does not drink alcohol – makes him feel awful as a diabetic when he drinks
  • It’s tough to be a diabetic
    • You can indulge, but a treat is a treat, not a staple
    • Must have good willpower
