The Gym

OLD GYMS

  • Gyms used to have names like “Vinnie’s Gym”
  • Gyms were often separated by gender
    • Women had a few hours they would work out
    • Men had the rest
  • Gyms used to be like very large work out rooms with few machines and steam rooms and pools etc., separate section for men and women
  • Rudimentary squat rack, punching bag, rope, pull up devices

NEW GYMS

  • Vinnie still marvels at all that gyms like 24 hour Fitness have
  • By and large, a lot of trainers at gyms are not the best trainers
  • Crazy stuff at new gyms, elliptical machines that work muscles you hardly need
    • People doing exercises that they don’t really need and disrupt other people in the gym
    • People pushing around plyometrics boxes around for exercise when you have a million machines that do the same things better
  • Concept 2 Rower — how to use a rowing machine correctly

  • The girls working on their butts with weights and such are the ones who will get the nice tushes.
  • Throw leg press and hack squats in there
  • When you do a squat with a bar on your shoulders, you want to do a normal, parallel feet squat, NOT a pile squat
    • your butt has to kind of poke out then
  • Squat- stand over the kettle bell
    • Eyes straight forward
    • Let your hands go to the kettle ball with your hands and hips freely bent
    • Hold kettle bell between your legs and keep coming down with it
    • Working hamstring, quads, and buttocks
  • Good lunges
  • Do “butts” 2-3 times with a day in between

    • She is getting paid for this
    • She caused a big stir, especially on the Facebook page, when she put out a tweet about how she “loves bread” and gets to eat bread Weight Watchers
    • Smart investment for Oprah because Weight Watchers makes their money from their clients’ failures

  • Meaghan knew Vinnie had to be on the Dr. Drew show
  • She is very involved in podcasts and running

BEING GLUTEN FREE

  • Meaghan went to Runner’s World Festival (4 races in three days (1/2 marathon))
    • Generally, people want to “carb up” before races
    • At this conference she went to they had a gluten free pasta option
  • Often, Gluten-Free marked foods are quite processed
    • eat REAL food, not foods that have to be marked gluten free if you can
  • It is frustrating when everyone asks if she eats “Quinoa” because she is gluten free
    • She said “Fuck Quinoa”
    • Even Quinoa can make you inflamed

RACE & TRIATHLONS

  • There is resistance to black women wanting to run/do triathlons simply because their hair can be hard to deal with and requires a lot of work
    • Meaghan thinks it is healthy and good to discuss race and gender and it makes the world interesting that people are different
  • Vinnie loves people of all races, genders, religions even if he rants or makes comments :)
