DONAL O’NEILL

  • Donal produced the film documentaries: Cereal Killers, which follows Donal who tries to avoid walking in his father’s footsteps of heart disease by becoming fat adapted, and Cereal Killers2, which follows ultra athlete, Sami Inkinen and his wife, Meredith, cross the Pacific Ocean in a rowboat on a ketogenic and fat-adapted diet.
  • Having never rowed before, Sam and Meredith rowed from San Francisco to Hawaii in 56 days doing the equivalent of 2 marathons per day
  • They were both fat-adapted and after this huge undertaking, they had no breakdown in body
  • They had no inflammation at all

DR. STEVE PHINNEY

  • Dr. Phinney has been advocating fat as fuel for 30+ years
  • He is the father of low carb and high fat for athletes
  • His findings support no need for sugar or grains for fuel
  • Intermittent power athletes who are fat adapted show positive results

WHY SUGARY SPORTS DRINKS STILL PROMOTED AS FUEL

  • Lots of businesses do not want this information out there
  • They have major financial support and momentum behind them
  • However, the information of low carb/high fat fuel is getting out there
  • Already is being seen in the ultra-running community

Weight loss, exercise and getting outside with Dr. John Ratey

by Vinnie Tortorich

Mar062015

Vinnie has been trying to get today’s guest on the show for a long time, so he is very excited to have Dr. John Ratey here today. Dr. Ratey is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology at Harvard and author of 8 books that have been translated into about 14 languages. His most recent book, Go Wild, is an amazing exploration of how our diet and even more importantly, our movement, effect our brain and our overall health.  *Important*…Vote for the Angriest Trainer Podcast in the Health & Fitness category every day until March 24th at www.PodCastAwards.com.  Thanks!

GO WILD

  • We need exercise/movement for our brains
  • Our brains evolved so we could be better movers and increase our language, social bonding and intellectual capacity
  • A moving brain is a thinking brain
  • When you are moving, you are using more brain cells than when you are doing any other human activity

GRAINS AND SUGARS IN OUR DIET

  • As we became fat-phobic in the 50’s and 60’s and replaced good fat with carbs, mostly in the form of grains and sugars, we saw the beginning of the obesity crisis
  • With this unhealthy diet and lack of movement, living in a sedentary world, we saw an increase of illness such as diabetes

GET OUTSIDE ON A TRAIL AND RUN

  • We have lost touch with nature
  • We need to go outside a lot more
  • Running on a trail is much more beneficial than running on a tread mill
  • We are more mindful outside

FUEL FOR OUR BODIES

  • Humans are hunter/gatherers and meat eaters
  • It is not just about meat and fat…meat used to be full of nutrients
  • Today we are not getting all those nutrients
  • That it why it is important to have a lot of variety in the foods we chose
