ACCIDENTAL FASTING

  • Vinnie isn’t personally a big fan of intermittent fasting.
  • He’s not the guy who fasts, and he thinks fasting is not for everyone.
  • But, the perk of being fat adapted, is if you can’t get good food over some period of time, you’ll be okay.
    • This happened to Vinnie.
      • When he climbed much of Mount Whitney, he didn’t eat.
      • He could only make it because he was fat-adapted.
  • When you’re in a pinch, being fat-adapted can certainly help.
  • It’s also good when you’re traveling — many airports only have crap.

MT. WHITNEY

  • Vinnie and Don tried to summit Mt. Whitney while Vinnie was in town for Badwater.
  • However, he got up much of the mountain and began feeling like he had the flu.
  • Don then couldn’t find him on the mountain!
  • Vinnie was very dehydrated.
  • Fat adaption saved the day for him.
  • He did the mountain again, but only got a little ways up the mountain because it started storming with lightning.

ULTRA EVENTS WHILE FAT ADAPTED

  • When you’re fat adapted, you can still do ultras.
  • Serena will have some coffee and maybe an egg or two before a long run.
    • On the run, she’ll have olives or an Ultra Fat while going 30 miles.
  • When she gets back, she’ll eat a lot!
  • Some people need to eat more before they exercise; others do not.
  • Take care of yourself, but you can do it low carb.

PROTEIN POWDERS

  • Vinnie is not a big protein powder guy.
  • It’s better to get your protein from whole foods.
  • However, if you need to do a protein powder, Vinnie says egg-white or whey.
    • Make sure these are NOT flavored and do NOT have any sneaky sugars.

FITNESS MIDDLE CLASS

  • This has nothing to do with finance.
  • It has to do with the many people out there who are not super fit or super fat, but need to lose some weight and get metabolically healthier.
  • Vinnie just wants to help.
  • He will keep working at this goal.
    • This is why Vinnie’s always onto the next thing.
      • He’ll keep launching products to help, or documentaries to educate.

GETTING BACK INTO EXERCISE

  • When Serena moved to VA, she stopped running for a bit.
  • She found that her aerobic and anaerobic fitness went away.
  • Her general strength suffered when she stopped.
    • Balance was worse, general muscle strength was worse.
  • It’s a use it or lose it proposition.
    • There’s not a ton of residual value.
  • Get back into it slowly!
    • This is how you get back to where you were, or go even farther.
  • Protein only helps if we work our muscles hard, too.

WEIGHT FLUCTUATION

  • Stuart has been on the show before. Check it out here:
    • Getting on Track with Phone Consults – Episode 1488
  • He’s met Vinnie a couple of times: in LA and at the Seattle Meat-Up.
  • Originally, before this way of eating in 2016, he was north of 270 lbs at 5’11”.
    • Now, he’s in his mid-180s, and 42 years old.
  • He’s lost almost 100 lbs!
    • He fluctuates a few pounds but doesn’t worry about it.
      • This could be water weight and sometimes eating a bit more food than other times.
      • He also travels a lot which can affect his sleep schedule.
        • Vinnie finds this fairly common among folks who travel so much.
      • He also doesn’t see a big change in how clothes fit during this time.
  • Everyone can fluctuate 3-5 lbs on any given day.
    • This is why Vinnie says throw the scale away.
  • Stuart has benefitted from the phone consults.
    • Vinnie can help you fine-tune your way of eating to benefit you most.
  • Stuart is a contractor and has stayed active throughout his life.
    • He’s always been quite strong, but wasn’t really in shape before this.
    • Now he’s running and found success in being in Zone 2.
  • He thinks he holds on to a bit more weight when he’s getting out and about less and eating more veggies as opposed to meat.
