  • Everyone was ill-prepared for the cold weather and rain

LISTENER QUESTIONS

  • Emily Washburn of Austin, TX tried Paleo for about 6 weeks
  • She is trying NSNG again
  • She wants to know about wine and cheese
  • Wine has a lot of sugar and will give you an insulin spike and you cannot eat cheese without impunity

ANDY STARTS THE 100-DAY CHALLENGE

  • The Facebook NSNG Group was challenged to do pure NSNG for 100 days
  • Andy started on January 1, 2015
  • It’s hard eating out…there’s sugar where you don’t expect it
  • He lost 5 lbs in 14 days, but don’t weigh yourself every day

TRANSITION TO 100 DAYS

THE ANGRIEST TRAINER 336: ONE-ON-NONE

by Vinnie Tortorich

Jan212015

Thursday’s edition of The Angriest Trainer is usually a one-on-one with Vinnie and a guest. Well, fasten your seatbelts…today we have: no music, no lead-in, no “and now, America’s Angriest Trainer”, no ads and NO GUEST!  Zero. Vinnie is alone in front of the mic. Why? Because we lost a podcast. That’s right. We lost it. So while he was running today,  Vinnie realized “I can do this podcast myself, with no guest.”  Let’s see what happens…

  • Amazon

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • Usually with a guest, we use 2 mics, and amazing Bill Meadows cleans up the audio and combines the two audio files into The Angriest Trainer Podcast…but we lost podcast!
  • When Vinnie still lived in Louisiana, he had a fitness show called “Talking Fitness” on WSMB AM in New Orleans. It was just Vinnie on a mic. Just like today.
  • His nephew, Mike Tortorich and his co-host, Joey Tortorich have a podcast, Dudes in a Room, Check out episode 096, “Je Suis Charlie” which is a “one-on-none” episode
  • Vinnie had been thinking about doing a one-on-none podcast …just like the good ol’ days

NARCISSISM

  • Ultra sports athletes are the most narcissistic people on the planet. Why? Because to do this sport you have to be selfish with your time
  • After years of competing, athletes start to connect with charities
  • It makes ultra athletes feel better about themselves; their time goes to helping other people
  • Vinnie thinks maybe his podcast helps people with advice, FAQ’s and his free newsletter

PODCAST CALLERS AND QUESTIONS

  • Olivia – Has famous parents, actor Jack Scalia and Miss Universe, Karen Baldwin. She had 3-4 calls with Vinnie to help her with injury…she’s back in shape and on NSNG
  • What should I eat on a daily basis? It’s not about being “carb-a-phobic”, it’s about seeing where grains and sugar sneak into your food so you can avoid glucose spike
  • What should I do about cravings? Yes, in the beginning, before you are fat adapted, there will be cravings. Comedian Bobby Kelly said it was easier getting off drugs than grains and sugar. Once you’re on the other side, it gets easy
  • What exercise should I do? Stick to one program for a period of time so you feel a sense of accomplishment. Use exercise to get in better shape, not for weight loss

BOOK #2

  • Sequel to Fitness Confidential
  • Dean Lorey and Vinnie are working on it together. Todd Farmer is doing research
  • Not so much of a memoir…focused on answering your questions
  • Due out middle of 2015

STARTING NEXT WEEK

  • New podcast on Wednesday with Vinnie and Andy Schreiber sponsored by Pure Vitamin Club
  • 5 minutes answering questions about health and fitness 5 minutes about things (like titanium dioxide) that are in vitamins and shouldn’t be there

ANGRIEST TRAINER 335: TOP 100 FITNESS LIST

by Vinnie Tortorich

Jan202015

Vinnie and Anna discuss a Top 100 Influential People in Fitness List that has come out…and they tear it apart. Vinnie’s contention is that for the most part…it has nothing to do with fitness!!! What is it based on? And after they are done, they settle down to talking about injuries. What they are and how to treat them. Listen and learn…

TOP 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN FITNESS LIST

  • Vinnie wants to know – what was the criteria? Who did the “choosing”?
  • #17 is Gwenyth Paltrow….What has she done? and #6 is Tara Stiles…Who?
  • Tony Horton is #29…he should be pissed off
  • And #23 is Bethanny Frankel…she makes diet vodka!

SO WHERE’S VINNIE?

  • He’s not on the list because he didn’t go after it.
  • Vinnie didn’t pay a publicist to get him on it
  • When Fitness Confidential came out, he hired and fired two publicists
  • It wasn’t worth the money

TENDONITIS AND INJURIES

  • A tendon connects a muscle to bone.  A ligament is like a small cushion to keep bones from  rubbing together
  • When you pull or strain a muscle, just a few fibers in the muscle have broken apart
  • A muscle tear or rip has to be repaired by surgery

ICING AND STRETCHING

  • Ice at least 3 times a day for at least 20 minutes
  • As cold as possible covering the injured area
  • Don’t use foam roller or tennis ball until pain has subsided
  • Stretching keeps muscles supple…take time and ease into it

THE ANGRIEST TRAINER 334: ONE-ON-ONE WITH JJ VIRGIN

by Vinnie Tortorich

Jan152015

Today’s amazing guest is JJ Virgin, celebrity nutritionist, fitness expert and three-time NY Times bestselling author. Her books include: JJ Virgin’s Sugar Impact Diet, The Virgin Diet and The Virgin Diet Cookbook. She is also the best-selling author of Six Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy as well as a prominent TV and print media personality. You can find JJ at her website, JJVirgin.com.

WHY THEY DID THIS PODCAST OVER AGAIN

  • The first interview they wound up bashing TV personalities that didn’t agree with their views on diet and nutrition
  • JJ knows how to work the media
  • She felt she would rather join them than bash them…you don’t have to convert the converted
  • TV is driven by advertising and ratings and you have to walk a fine line between getting your message out and stepping on advertiser’s toes.

FITNESS AND DIET

  • JJ and Vinnie have very similar views on diet
  • Vinnie follows NSNG
  • JJ believes in no dairy, no gluten, no soy, low or no sugar and no GMO
  • She is a big proponent of fish oil…like Carlson Salmon Oil Soft Gels 1000

HOW JJ TURNED A TRAGEDY INTO A TURNING POINT

  •  2 years ago, on September 10,  JJ’s son, Grant, went for a walk at dusk and was hit by a car going 30 mph. It was a hit and run.
  • He was rushed to the hospital with a torn aorta, brain bleed and multiple fractures…he was dying
  • Got him to UCLA by helicopter and while his physical injuries were fixed, JJ was told that he could stay in a coma
  • JJ thought “What if this was the best thing that could happen and a turning point?” And she began talking to him. She held his hand and spoke to him and he lifted his hand. She knew he was still there

WHAT JJ USED TO HELP HEAL GRANT

  • Fish Oil 7 Grams along with antioxidants
  • No hospital food…brought him a lot of fermented food
  • Used aroma therapy, Energy work, 10,000 IU of vitamin D, especially because he was getting no sun in the hospital
  • Probiotics because of the massive antibiotics, Vitamin C 4 to 5 months of Progesterone 200 mg

THE MIRACLE TODAY

  • Today, 2 years later, Grant is 6’1” and in amazing shape
  • You may notice his words can get jumbled
  • They worked with Dr. Daniel Amen who works with brain injuries. His website is AmenClinic.com
  • Also worked with Dr. Mercola who did a Skype Interview with JJ and Grant

ANGRIEST TRAINER 332: ONE-ON-ONE WITH IVOR CUMMINS

by Vinnie Tortorich

Jan072015

Today’s return guest is one of Vinnie’s favorites, Ivor Cummins, host of The Fat Emperor.  Vinnie discusses with Ivor how his problem solving skills in engineering have also been useful in his research of health and nutrition. Learn about the role of Vitamin D in optimum health, how carbs affect us in all areas of health, Omega 3 and Omega 6 and what works with genetic heart disease where medicines fail…

IVOR’S RESEARCH

  • Ivor got a bad blood report…his cholesterol was high
  • Wanted to find out about markers and cholesterol
  • His GGT was high which is linked to a higher mortality rate
  • Needed his technical background to do research…not something he could just Google or look up in Wikipedia

WHAT IVOR DISCOVERED

  • What doctor’s were telling us about cholesterol was wrong
  • A high LDL count is a very weak variable in determining heart health
  • Blood tests are used to determine whether to give statins
  • But medical professionals don’t dig deep enough; they don’t get in the science and research

NUTRITION AND HEALTH

  • Nutrition is fundamental to overall health as well as the role of grains, sugar, Omega 6/Omega 3 ratio and Vitamin D levels
  • Omega 6 and Omega 3 compete for pathways to metabolize and if we have a higher level of Omega 6 it tends towards an inflammatory state
  • 70% of people in the U.S. have insufficient Vitamin D, especially in northern latitudes where they do not get a lot of sun
  • Doctors upped the daily dosage of Vitamin D from 400 i.u. to 600 i.u. and can go as high as 3-4,000 i.u’s a day

LPa AND HEART DISEASE

  • LPa is a very strong, key genetic risk for heart disease
  • High levels do not respond to medication
  • However, they do respond to a low-carb diet
  • Even genetic risk factors can be affected by low-carb diets
