Carlos Dones joins Vinnie Tortorich to discuss running 170 miles through the Grand Canyon NSNG on this Saturday episode of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

WHO IS CARLOS?

  • Has run over one million miles, rim to rim of Grand Canyon
  • Was at the LA meet up — Vinnie did a bike fitting for him and they became friends

GRAND TO GRAND

  • Carlos called Vinnie asking if this race (170 miles across the Grand Canyon) NSNG
    • Vinnie had his doubts
    • Carlos has to carry everything he is going to eat — difficult due to time and heat
  • 7 days, 6 stages, carrying everything you need
    • Packaged, low sugar, minimum grain was the plan for Carlos
    • Required to carry at least 14,000 calories
      • Carlos carried 16,000 calories
  • Carlos wanted to minimize sugar because he was becoming fat adapted
    • Most of his food had between 2-3 grams of sugar
    • Took UCAN bars, low sugar, Epic bars, turkey bars, beef bars
    • Coconut oil, all types of nut butters
    • 2 pre dehydrated meals per day
      • Black beans, rice, vegetables
    • ~600 calories per breakfast
  • Averaging a marathon per day, mostly uphill
    • Ate between 1000-1200 calories per day
    • ~120 grams of sugar over the course of 7 days
  • Carlos finished 34th place
    • He did not crash at all
    • Had no swelling, no elephantitis
