  • Vinnie plays an Instagram which is relevant to the conversation. (48:00)
    • People get so confused because of certain things they hear on the internet.

HIKING MOUNT WHITNEY

  • Don and Vinnie tried to hike Mt. Whitney recently.
  • First, they stayed in Lone Pine.
    • It’s a very, very small place.
  • For Mt. Whitney, they only give 100 passes a day.
    • The question Vinnie and Don have is: why? There is so much space!
      • For other mountains in CA, WA, and CO, there are thousands every day.
    • They finally learned why, and got the 411 on the mountain’s rangers.
  • This year, Don and Vinnie climbed it without a pass — they know this wasn’t right, but they picked up trash on the way up and down.
  • They tried to do the hike a couple of days.
    • To prep, they did a shorter hike.
    • After a failed attempt for Vinnie, they were plagued by thunderstorms.
  • Vinnie, for whatever reason, got really sick while he was hiking and couldn’t summit.
    • He was disoriented and flu-ey, and he hadn’t been drinking water because that made him feel sick, too.
    • Vinnie was nearly falling over.
    • Don thought he physically lost him at one point!
      • He thought maybe he had gotten too dizzy and fallen off the mountain.

ULTRA SALT

  • Don had some misconceptions.
  • You CAN overdo salt.
  • He would do 1000 mg of salt with 16 oz of water.  Really, you only need that with a liter of water.
  • If you feel lightheaded or are going to do heavy exercise, take a couple of Ultra Salts, but there is a limit.
    • Vinnie says take 15-20 oz of water per Ultra Salt.
  • Too much water without electrolytes can be a problem; too much salt is the opposite problem.

DON’S FAT LOSS

  • Don has lost a substantial amount of weight.
  • Now, he can hike up and down Mount Whitney with much more ease.
  • Zone 2 training was also important for him.
  • For Don, pizza and ice cream is what got him high.
    • He needed to break the addiction and emotion-numbing effect of food.

    • Works for a car dealership in communications and marketing
  • Surrounded by essentially nothing
  • Lonnie in the Facebook group recommended to Vinnie that she be on this podcast!
  • She found NSNG after failure with everything else (all the crap diets)
    • Did Keto for awhile before but ate all the fake sweeteners and didn’t have much progress
      • Was still a sugar addict
    • Her dad introduced her to the Facebook group, and she began to see changes
  • Had to get over emotional eating
    • When she doesn’t eat sugar or grains, she does not have the emotional food cravings as much
  • Haley has two kids – 1 and 4
  • She is losing weight in small amounts
  • Currently 5’7″, 214 lbs
    • Was 275 a year ago after her second baby
  • She’ll go several weeks really strict, then fall of the wagon
    • There’s a big psychological component to it
  • Huge carnivore

REACTIONS TO HEALTHY EATING

  • She does not want to live her life centered around food
    • Doesn’t lecture others on how to eat or justify her way of eating
  • She and Vinnie both don’t explain to others because people, uninformed, try to fight back
  • Don’t engage with people if they won’t listen – they’re likely jealous, or too addicted to carbs
  • You don’t need to justify your healthy eating to anyone else
    • If it works for you, do it!
  • Make your health your top priority – NOT making other people feel good about how you eat
  • Don’t let others pressure you into eating crap in social situations

Angriest Trainer 301: 1-on-1 with Isabel Foxen Duke

by Vinnie Tortorich

Isabel Foxen Duke is a Brooklyn-based Life Coach who teaches a master class called “Stop Fighting Food” that focuses on food and our mindset around food.  She discusses the physical and emotional reasons that diets and calorie restriction actually encourages binge eating.  Join Anna and Isabel and learn how to cultivate a new attitude toward dieting and food.

We Live in a Diet Culture

  • Look at diet from the evidence-based standpoint that “the degree to which we have restriction in our lives is the degree to which we tend to lean on food for emotional comfort”
  • Emotional eating is impulsive and a craving that is out of our control
  • We are taught to use willpower to actively fight our body’s needs

Why People Fail at Diets

  • Dieting is deciding what your body needs by some external plan rather than our individual needs
  • In “calorie deprivation”, the need for food now – our biology – will win in the attempt of getting our blood sugar back up
  • There are two parts:  The physical aspect and the emotional aspect

Emotional Aspect

  • There is guilt, shame and moral judgement for making “bad” food choices
  • This is a precursor to spiraling binge-eating…we’re either off the wagon or on the wagon
  • Need to get to a place of peace around food…taking our power back from food
  • We give food so much power – as if eating a cupcake makes us a “disgusting fatty”

“Stop Fighting Fat” Course

  • Learn new coping mechanisms
  • If I do eat emotionally, how do I do I keep from binging
  • Develop an ease and sanity around food
  • Learn to finally drop the fight and make food about instinct and biology

One of Anna’s fave quotes from this episode: “How can we finally drop the fight and make food about our instincts and our biology?” –Isabel Foxen Duke

Stop Fighting Food teaches women how to “stop feeling crazy around food.” That means, get off the diet-binge cycle, stop feeling “out of control around food,” and finally have a life that doesn’t revolve around trying to lose the last 10 (or 50) lbs. This program addresses the thinking that underlies compulsive eating and obsession with food, rather than giving specific behavioral instructions or nutrition information. The Free Video Training Series (an introduction to the work) covers topics like:

-Why trying to control yourself around food always backfires

-The two primary reasons people eat outside of physical need (The difference between Emotional Eating & Binge-Eating)

-Why having a “normal” relationship with food requires liking your body first

The Master Class goes into extensive depth on topics like “intuitive eating,” “emotional/binge eating,” “body positivity” and will leave women with all of the mental tools they need to take their power back from food.
