LEARNING DISCIPLINE

  • Playing football in high school was tough!
  • In Louisiana, football was life.
  • Every moment was ‘the fourth quarter.’
  • Their coach wouldn’t let them drink water.
    • He’d pour it into their hands and tell them to open their hands and let the water run through.
  • It was no easy feat, and it made it hard to eat.
    • And maybe it was a little sadistic.
  • Though it was tough, it prepared Vinnie for college ball (and in ways, for life).
  • It was usually only this tough during hell week.
    • They had two-a-days for about two weeks.
  • These days, there are rules that prohibit this because kids used to die in the South from heat exhaustion and dehydration.
    • Nothing is this important that kids should die for it.
  • But Vinnie has carried the discipline he learned in football throughout his life.

GOING SLOW IN THE GYM

  • She’s been following Vinnie’s advice.
  • Overall, it’s been slow going.
    • More reps at lower weights.
  • But then Gina realized it got too easy and added some weight.
    • That’s when you know to add more weight!
  • In a lot of ways, Gina is doing something different than most of the people in the gym and she might get some looks, but she sticks to it and has seen results.
    • It is OKAY to go slow.
  • If you do it correctly, you don’t have to spend your life in the gym.

Failed Weight Loss Surgery & Cycling – Episode 2037

SCOTT KING

  • Scott has an absolutely amazing story.
  • His weight now hovers around 250 lbs at 6’1″.
    • He still has weight to lose, but it’s a heck of a lot better than when he weighed well over 500 lbs and was near real sickness and possibly death.
  • Nobody can be perfect, but if you strive for perfection you can land on excellence.
    • And Scott has definitely done that with his weight loss.

FAILED WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

  • Scott had a gastric style surgery at 552 lbs.
    • He got down to 276 lbs but tended to sit around 300 lbs.
      • After, he put almost all the weight back on.
  • Vinnie talks to lots of people who have similar experiences.
    • And they feel terribly after the surgeries and struggle to get proper nutrients.
  • There can be many complications.
  • If it worked for you, great! But this is not a magic pill.

GETTING IN SHAPE

  • He’s also doing well with his bike.
    • Vinnie and he talk bike specs.
  • This is one of the best ways to get in shape!
  • For Zone 2 exercise, how’s the best way to do that?
    • You can split up your exercise throughout the day so long as you’re doing enough.
      • 45 min in the morning and 45 min in the evening is plenty on the bike so long as you can get some longer rides in on the weekend.
        • But obviously, work up to this.
  • Rest days are very important, especially when you’re cycling!

Modeling Good Health with Charlotte McKinney – Episode 2036

by Vinnie Tortorich

CHARLOTTE MCKINNEY

BIO

Holding the title of one of the ‘Sexiest Women’ by GQ and landing the coveted title of GQ’s ‘International Model of the Year’, actress and model Charlotte McKinney will be on the silver screen this year with the indie film THE ARGUMENT, starring Maggie Q (“Designated Survivor”) and Dan Fogler (“The Walking Dead”) and comedy film GUEST HOUSE, starring Pauly Shore (“Son In Law”) and Billy Zane (“Titanic”), along with Sony Pictures’ 2020 supernatural horror film, FANTASY ISLAND.
The social media darling grew up in Orlando and climbed the modeling ladder from Miami to Malibu. In 2015 she got her break when she graced the small screen with millions of viewers watching her au naturel in a Carl’s Jr. “All Natural” Super Bowl commercial, which garnered an astounding 4.5 billion impressions in less than a year of its launch. She returned to television screens across the U.S. when her second campaign with the fast-food chain launched, making Charlotte the first-ever returning lead star for the brand.

On the acting front, she’s appeared in several films including Paramount Pictures’ BAYWATCH (with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), Crackle’s MAD FAMILIES (opposite Charlie Sheen) and 2B Film’s/Sony Picture’s FIRST WE TAKE BROOKLYN (opposite Academy Award nominee Harvey Keitel and AnnaLynne McCord). She’s also had guest appearances on television shows such as Netflix comedy series ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’, Blackpills’ grindhouse-style feminist series “A Girl Is A Gun” (alongside Denise Richards), CBS’ action-adventure reboot “Macgyver,” and partook in Netflix’s ‘Historical Roasts’ alongside Jeffrey Ross.

In addition to pursuing acting and modeling, McKinney is a longtime proud supporter of Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization that aims to create opportunities for those with developmental disabilities. She also works heavily with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Outside of work and her philanthropic work, Charlotte aims to live a healthy and active life by practicing hot yoga and Pilates, along with maintaining a clean and healthy diet.

  • Charlotte is a fabulous model.
  • She gained some notoriety from the Super Bowl commercial several years ago in which she ate a hamburger.
    • Since, she has found wild success and was even on Dancing with the Stars.
  • Now, Charlotte is 28.
  • She stresses about a lot, including upkeep and eating and living healthily.
  • After the Super Bowl ad, she signed with an agency and got more into the acting side.

MODELING GOOD HEALTH

  • Charlotte is very health-focused.
    • For awhile, she got way too thin.
      • She wasn’t eating meat or dairy, but her doctor told her she needed to again.
        • She got back on the meat train and has never turned around!
          • This was hard as a woman in LA — the culture is different.
  • Traditionally, she’s been quiet about her health but as more women have opened up, so has she.
    • Years ago, she had a terrible eating disorder. She derived her worth from her body and she has had to fight that.
  • She looks at the ingredients in what she eats.
  • If it has chemicals or it’s processed, it’s out.
    • Recently, she reposted a video of Vinnie’s where he recited the ingredients in a burger.
  • Breaking the diet culture in the back of your head is something she still battles but works toward.
    • She has had to teach herself not to overdo things — exercise, cut out meat, etc.

Conquering the Yo-Yo – Episode 2032

by Vinnie Tortorich

ED’S STORY

  • Ed was thin as a kid.
  • Over time, however, he developed an addiction to food and gained weight in high school and beyond.
    • He hid behind the humor and let people make jokes about his obesity. He even played along.
  • But he has an amazing story and has reclaimed his health!

CONQUERING THE YO-YO

  • After yo-yoing, he ended up at 407 lbs around 47 years old at 5’10”.
    • When he ‘re-met’ his wife, he knew he had to do something.
    • He tried CICO, lived at the gym, and more.
      • It didn’t work!
        • For awhile, he felt helpless.
  • Gaining and losing hundreds of pounds like Ed did is really bad for your body and all of your organs.
  • He got down to 230s and back up to 330 in 2017.
  • Then, his wife found this book: Fitness Confidential.
  • At the time he was trying meal plans but began researching keto and realized the plans were a waste of money.
  • And then, the real change began!

BELIEVING IN THE PROCESS

  • As he kept reading, the wealth of knowledge built up.
  • He feels that if you don’t believe in what you’re trying to do, you won’t really be able to do it.
  • He also incorporated some fasting.
  • In 6 months, he lost 100 lbs and was down to about 225.
  • He started walking and counting his steps.
    • One day, he got up to 100,000 steps.
      • Ed did this at least a dozen times.
  • And then, he began running.
    • He only did this after he began losing weight! Start with walking!
  • Ed has done some ultra events now.
    • He did 200 miles recently!
      • This was over six days.
  • Then, he went right into preparing for a 100 mile race.
  • Ed is like a super hero!

Carbohydrate Addiction & Food Freedom with Dr. Jen Unwin – Episode 2031

by Vinnie Tortorich

Episode 2031 – On this Friday show, Vinnie Tortorich and Dr. Jen Unwin talk her work as a clinical psychologist, finding a low carb diet, taking control of carbohydrate addiction, her book Fork in the Road: A Helpful Guide to Food Freedom, controlling hormones, and more.

DR. JEN UNWIN

  • Dr. Unwin’s husband, Dr. David Unwin, has been on the show before.
  • Check out his appearance on the show!
    • He’s also a doctor.
  • She is a clinical psychologist who focuses on the relationship between food and our brains.
  • Now, she helps her patients change their life by controlling their relationships to carbohydrates.
  • Her fabulous book is available here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08XX4ZH3F/ref=cm_sw_r_em_api_fabc_N0TGXF3VYC041NQEXKHB

CARBOHYDRATE ADDICTION

  • Dr. Unwin has always felt a crazy draw to food.
  • She eventually began to see her food through an addiction lens.
  • When Jen found low carb, she got the science, and on day 8 she started to feel much better.
  • Only then did she understand — one bite is too many and one thousand is never enough.
  • She knew she had to abstain completely and treat it like any other addiction.
    • So for her, there is no life into living.
      • You should evaluate your relationship to carbs before you decide whether you want to put LIL or not.
  • For some people, this isn’t a problem, but for others, it absolutely changes your quality of life when you take control of the addiction.
  • As addicts, we might know carbs are bad for us, but we feel like we can’t help it.
  • This is why going all in from the beginning can be very important.
  • Food manufacturers know people have these addictions, and they play into it.
  • If you’re eating ‘keto’ things, it might still be feeding the addiction.
    • For Dr. Jen Unwin, peanut butter was something for her that continued to feed the addiction.
      • She had to cut it out completely.
