The fear of carbs (and why you shouldn’t be carb-phobic)

by Vinnie Tortorich

Today is the 3rd episode of the new Saturday Show…One-On-One with a listener question. Vinnie is going to see how this works out because Saturday is historically a wasteland for new podcasts. We now have podcast every Monday – the original show with Vinnie and Anna, Wednesday – our new short show with Andy Schreiber and Friday – Vinnie’s One-On-One podcast. Today’s listener question comes from Lea Crager.

LEA IS A SUPERFAN

  • Worth the money
  • You can give any amount you want
  • Keeps TheAngriest Trainer going
  • Folks, the money is not going to get Vinnie rich

QUESTION

  • When Lea started NSNG, about a year ago, she went into ketosis easily
  • But then she started getting carb-phobic
  • She knows the benefits of ketosis…for example, it improves brain function
  • What are the right foods to eat?

VINNIE’S THOUGHTS ON KETOSIS AND NSNG

  • He doesn’t believe you have to be in ketosis to lose weight…it is not a magic bullet
  • You can eat lots of veggies and berries and still go into ketosis
  • Don’t be carb-phobic..just cut out sugar and grains
  • If you are eating real foods, like leafy greens, carbs are not a problem

by Vinnie Tortorich

DR. D’AGOSTINO’S RESEARCH

  • Funded by the Navy for about 10 years
  • Grant was to study the cellular and molecular mechanism of oxygen toxicity seizures
  • These seizures result from the specialized equipment that Special Ops and Navy Seals use
  • Researching why oxygen is toxic to brain in high levels

NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PEOPLE IN SERVICE

  • Acute vs chronically sustained ketosis
  • In the beginning there is decreased performance in physical and mental ability
  • Body needs time to adapt to running off of a different fuel source
  • Fat rather than glucose

MCT (MEDIUM CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDES)

  • Easily digested fat found in coconut oil, as well as a variety of other products, and is a very healthy fat…
  • It provides instant and sustained energy
  • Versatile and easy to incorporate into food
  • Use to make salad dressing, whey protein shakes

DIABETIC OR ALCOHOLIC KETOACIDOSIS VS NUTRITIONAL KETOSIS

  • Doctors not taught about Nutrition Science in school
  • Ketones are a bad word…considered metabolic poison
  • People who adapt ketogenic lifestyle and get bloodwork at doctor’s office
  • Seen as a red flag…told to get off diet as fast as possible because they are in a dangerous metabolic state
  • Of course, this is not true

by Vinnie Tortorich

Welcome to Episode 5 of the Wednesday short show with Andy Schreiber. Today Vinnie and Andy discuss how much Vitamin D we really need and what is a healthy amount of weight to lose per week. Listen and learn…

VITAMIN D – WHEN IS IT TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING?

  • Vitamin D deficiency is an increasing problem especially among older women
  • We just don’t get enough natural sunshine with no sunscreen
  • Also people are eating less dairy and drinking less milk which is fortified with Vitamin D
  • Because of this deficiency, rickets is on the comeback, osteoporosis, muscle weakness and malnutrition

HOW MUCH VITAMIN D IS HELPFUL AND WHEN IS IT TOXIC

  • Most multi-supplements are around 400 iu
  • People are taking 10,000 iu per dose which is 25 times the recommended dose
  • This can cause other problems like liver damage
  • You need to get a blood test to see if you are deficient

HOW MUCH WEIGHT IS IT REASONABLE TO LOSE PER MONTH

  • Andy has lost 10 pounds in one month on the “No Life Into Living” challenge
  • Vinnie says that 1-2 lbs a week is a healthy rate…so 10 pounds per month is on target
  • As you lose weight, the rate will slow down.

Running, Hiking and Multivitamin Packaging

by Vinnie Tortorich

Welcome to the Wednesday short show with Andy Schreiber. Listeners seem to be loving this podcast so we are going to continue with them. Andy asks why vitamins are packaged in amber glass bottles and how effective is outdoor exercise.

WHY ARE SOME VITAMINS PACKAGED IN AMBER-GLASS BOTTLES?

  • Consumers assume vitamins packaged in amber-glass bottles to be a superior product
  • Seems medicinal…doctors used to put medicine in tinted bottles to shield it from light and deterioration
  • For certain products, like salmon oil, it makes a difference
  • Fish oil is delicate and light can cause it to become rancid

HOW EFFECTIVE IS SLOWER, LONGER DURATION EXERCISE AS COMPARED TO RUNNING OR SPINNING?

  • Andy hates running. It is too jarring but he loves hiking and will do 10 miles with a lot of elevation.
  • How does that compare with high intensity exercise?
  • It is actually Zone 2 training and it is great for your heart
  • Zone 2 is getting your pulse to 180 minus your age

GABRIELA FROM HOUSTON, TX

  • Gabriela will be coming to Woodland Hills, CA for our NSNG Meet-Up March 27-29, 2015 with her husband.
  • It’s going to be a great weekend
  • Anna and Vinnie will do a podcast where everyone will be included
  • You will also have plenty of time to explore L.A. on your own or with your new NSNG friends!

GABRIELA’S QUESTION

  • How do you jump start weight loss after you’ve put some “life into living” during the holidays?
  • It’s always easier to lose weight initially because you have more weight to lose and you will see that big jump in the first week
  • NSNG allows dairy, but not everyone can handle it.
  • It is a very calorie-dense food
  • Give it another week or so to let your body readjust

THE ANGRIEST TRAINER 344: LISTENER QUESTIONS

by Vinnie Tortorich

QUESTION FROM SUZANNA HUTCHINSON

  • You have recipes that sound great, but some call for coconut sugar. I thought on NSNG you couldn’t have any sugar. What’s the deal?
  • This is a lifestyle, not a diet. It’s not a “never have sugar again” proposition
  • We put “life into living” and have those treats during celebrations and parties
  • All sugar will cause a glucose shift so it helps to balance it with fat

ANOTHER QUESTION FROM SUZANNA

  • She is 71 and eats very little sugars and grain.
  • Show focuses on younger people. What about older people?
  • You can still lose weight after 60.
  • You can work out the same amount as you did when you were younger but it will take you longer to recover
  • Remember to stretch even for 10 minutes…it will help you stay young

WHAT NOT TO EAT DURING WINTER SEASON

  • Try to eat foods that are in season. They are healthier and taste better
  • Today we can get anything year round We lose touch with what’s in season
  • Vinnie challenges many items on list

QUESTION FROM AARON CAMPBELL

  • Challenges Vinnie’s description of what a stress fracture is
  • Aaron contends it is tiny cracks in the bone
  • Vinnie had said it was where the tendons pull away
  • However, he agrees with Vinnie that the only thing to do is rest and ice
