  • A plant-based cookbook and lifestyle guide
  • Just want people to make better choices
  • Everyone can agree that it is better to eat more greens

VEGAN VS. PALEO

  • There is a happy medium between the two
  • We are the most prosperous country and also the sickest
  • 1 out of 3 Americans will die of heart disease and diabetes.
  • Obesity is a national disaster

WELLNESS AND HEALTH

  • Eating well is more affordable than people think, regardless of socioeconomic condition
  • People tend to see wellness as elitist, that it’s not for the masses
  • That prevailing notion is not true
  • It takes more work…it certainly is easier to just pick up fast foods

INDUSTRIALIZED STATE OF ANIMAL AGRICULTURE

  • The way we raise animals is broken
  • There is huge water waste, environmental implications, land use
  • Not a vegan issue…then how do we raise them?
  • Grass-fed beef is expensive.  Also looked on as elitist

THE 8 TYPES OF VITAMIN B

  • Vitamin B1 – Thiamine, Vitamin B2 – Riboflavin, Vitamin B3 – Niacin, Pantothenic Acid (historically known as B5), Biotin, B6, B12 and Folic Acid
  • When they were originally researched, they were all understood to be one vitamin – B
  • As they were broken up, they were kept in the B family but renamed

by Vinnie Tortorich

Welcome to the Friday One-On-One show with Vinnie Tortorich.  Today’s guest is Tom Naughton who directed and starred in the movie, Fathead.  The movie questions the claim in the movie Super Size Me that fast food is responsible for the rampant obesity in this country.  Listen and learn…

TOM’S THOUGHTS ON SUPER SIZE ME

  • He thinks Morgan Spurlock, director of Super Size Me, and the movie itself are very entertaining
  • It’s obviously a setup
  • The nutritionist in the movie berates Spurlock for eating 5000 calories a day
  • We never saw his food log.  You would have to eat fast food and extra food

THE GOVERNMENTS ROLE

  • Government should not be in food business or diet recommendation business
  • The government will throw millions of dollars behind wheat, soy and corn
  • They have GMO in their back pocket

VEGANS

  • Tom agrees with Vinnie that it really isn’t good for your health
  • Vegan’s health improves because along with giving up meat, they also give up sugar, white bread, processed foods and probably alcohol.  They give up a lot of poor habits
  • Ethical reasons for going Vegan are another story
  • Initial weight loss is also related to cleaning up your diet

BEING CARB-PHOBIC

  • Unnecessary…rice used to be a side dish and pasta used to be a side dish
  • Today at  home and in restaurants, carbs like rice and pasta are the main dish
  • 70 years ago, the focus was not on “no carbs”, it was on balance…don’t eat too many starches
  • In the 40’s, the recommended starch per day was 2 servings….like one piece of bread or one potato.
  • Today the food pyramid suggests 11 servings

IS IT EFFECTIVE TO WORK OUT BEFORE YOU EAT?

  • There’s no reason to work out without eating
  • Cyclists sometimes do it before a race to lose weight
  • More effective to eat and get your metabolism moving
  • Exercise is a poor way to lose weight…you are going to have to replace calories you burned

WHEN YOUR ARE INTERVAL/ANAEROBIC EXERCISING, CAN YOU EAT MORE CARBS?

  • It is also ok to up your carbs especially if you are training for an event
  • Get the carbs from veggies first, then fruit
  • Ok to have a carb like a potato…but keep track.  If you start craving sugar…pull back
