by Vinnie Tortorich

VINNIE’S ENERGY SHAKE

  • Vinnie’s ‘fat’ shake is now in Anna’s cookbook
  • Here’s a quick thing Vinnie whips up:
  • Lots of coconut oil
  • Kale
  • Chia seeds
    • Vinnie lets chia seeds sit in the water so that they get gooey and ‘slurpy’.
  • Fresh ginger root
  • Half of a 3 inch jalapeno
  • Water to help it blend
  • Berries are optional (only a few)
    • Anna likes it with blueberries

VINNIE’S AEROBICS & MARATHONS

  • Vinnie loves to run!
  • Now that his shoulder is way better, he can do much more aerobic work
  • Ran with Serena, a total of 2 hours
  • Check out: “Barkley Marathons” on Netflix
    • Only 14-15 finishers in this Marathon
      • It is crazy! Like a prison-escape
      • Runners who can run Badwater don’t even attempt this

AMAZON WINNER OF THE WEEK

  • Dave Dolak won this week!
  • He bought through the Amazon link on the website
  • He is a super fan
  • Getting ready for an ultra-kayak race (100 miles)
  • Bought a urine-bag and sunglasses for his race
  • He will win some NSNG Carb

‘HEALTHY’ ENERGY BARS

  • The only bar that Vinnie really endorses is EPIC Bars
  • Kind Bars are basically deconstructed Snickers bars
    • 19-23 grams of sugar in a Kind Bar
    • 3/5 top ingredients are sugar
  • Not awful in an emergency situation, but try to avoid if possible
  • “Diet” products are also awful for you because they are straight chemicals which compensates for the lack of calories (maybe even makes it worse)
    • Your body still registers this as sugar

WEIGHT, RELATIONSHIPS, AND BODY IMAGE

  • A lot of men who are overweight lose weight and think they will be a ladies magnet
    • However, physical is not NEARLY as important to women as men
      • Men need to work on their personalities and who they are as a person instead of obsessing over body image
  • Many people lose the weight, then ask “now what”
    • They want to go back to their old diet but that will put the weight right back on
  • In high school, Kristen struggled with her ‘image’ as she had a crossed eye and thick glasses
    • She was bullied and had a negative body imagine from the start
      • She changed schools at 17
      • Vinnie relates to this because he was really picked on (he was deaf/speech challenged when he was little and it carried all the way through high school)
  • Marni felt awkward and shy, although she was more outgoing than she gave herself credit for, but she did have to deal with lots of bullying
  • The bullying that the two endured still affects them to an extent although now the two have great self worth
  • Many beautiful women are insecure because they were bullied and brought down when they were younger
  • Both tried to be healthy by eating less and then binge-eating, which actually hurt their weight
    • Going to the gym made them ‘bulk up’ which caused them to obsess because they wanted to be lean

KETOSIS SUPPLEMENTS

  • Are there supplements to help with dietary ketosis? (KetoForce)
    • Are they worth it? Do they do anything?
    • It might make you get into dietary ketosis faster, but what is the point of this?
      • Not necessary for most to get in it quickly, or to be in it at all
  • Can these help athletes not eat while on long runs, etc.?  Lori gets hungry personally
    • She needs to eat fat before she gets out there
      • Instead of a protein and veggie shake with MCT, try a few eggs and some bacon
        • Will help you through longer workouts without eating extra
        • Being fat adapted may cause you to wake up 10 minutes earlier
  • Only really good bars are Epic bars

by Vinnie Tortorich

HEART DISEASE & CHOLESTEROL

  • Listener Todd
    • Had serum cholesterol go up, but triglycerides go way down from high fat diet
      • If you eat cholesterol it DOES NOT make your cholesterol go up
      • Eating fat DOES NOT turn into increase in cholesterol
      • If you eat a high fat diet, both bad AND good cholesterol goes up, but triglycerides go down, so it ends up being neutral
  • Cholesterol does not equal heart disease

DR. JASON FUNG & THE OBESITY CODE

  • Dr. Jason Fung’s new book
  • It is about what really makes people fat
  • How did we all decide at the same time that we would all eat more?
    • We DIDN’T, therefore CALORIES are NOT what is causing obesity!!!
  • We are programmed NOT to eat too many calories (Leptin)
  • If calories were the issue, then restricting calories would not make you feel bad and would allow you to shed the weight
    • That is not true
  • You have to figure out what is adjusting your own personal ‘thermostat’, and bring it down
    • Cortisol levels skyrocketing (due to stress, sleep deprivation, etc) can help obesity along
      • If stress and sleep deprivation is what is causing it, you have to change your lifestyle because diet won’t work if that is the case
  • Obesity is not a caloric imbalance, it is a hormonal imbalance
    • Both with insulin and with cortisol (two big factors)
    • Beer belly type fat is usually cortisol, where overall fatness is usually insulin
      • HUGE role with metabolizing glucose
  • Obesity is a multifactorial disease
  • Lypodystrophy
    • Super rare condition that causes dystrophy (breakdown) of adipose tissue

LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS

  • When you address proximate cause, it does nothing, must treat the ACTUAL cause
  • When you reduce your calories, you have to burn more than you lose to burn fat, you can’t just address the proximate cause which is reducing the calories

BUILDING MUSCLE: DOES NSNG ELIMINATE THE NEED TO BULK AND CUT?

  • The idea that you have to “bulk and cut” is just bro science
    • Regardless, to unhealthily “bulk”, you need to carbo load, and to cut, you drop carbs unhealthily
      • Body Builders did this to look good for one day
        • Listen to the show
  • You need protein and fats to build muscles
    • So much better to gain muscle NSNG — healthier with better muscles
  • Working for big muscles and strength are really one in the same
  • Guys who train with carbs are “fit fat”
    • They have huge muscles but practically look pregnant

HOW ANDY CHANGED VINNIE’S LIFE

  • Andy got Vinnie a SodaStream — Vinnie likes his water gassed up
  • Save a lot of money not buying Pellegrino etc even though the gas tanks are $15
  • Favorite appliance behind Vitamix
  • Vinnie made fizzy coffee from cold-brewed coffee
    • He loved his ice-soda coffee

ANDY’S DINNER PRE-PREPARED FOODS (ENCHILADA SUACE)

  • Wanted to make a Mexican chicken casserole-y thing without tortillas
  • He doesn’t always have time to do everything fresh in terms of prep
  • Got a can of El Pato enchilada sauce
    • Tomato puree
    • Water
    • Chili peppers
    • Salt
    • Onion
    • Citric acid
    • Garlic
    • Locust bean gum
    • spices
    • In a rush, this is not a bad pre-preapred food to have BUT tomato puree is risky
      • Not the end of the world if you don’t have an egregious amount
  • Used olive oil, spices, cotija cheese, skinless chicken browned, this sauce put it all in dish, melted mozzarella on top
  • Vinnie isn’t a huge mozzarella fan because it is low in fat and high in carbs for a cheese
