THE STANDARD OF CARE

  • Vinnie welcomes Dr. Philip Ovadia back to the show for another visit and to chat a bit about Dr. Ovadia’s reputation for not mincing words. (2:40)
  • Vinnie asks Dr. Ovadia what exactly is meant in the medical industry by “the standard of care”, and how he prefers to approach his medical practice. (5:40)
  • Dr. Ovadia explains he only recommends a statin when it will benefit the patient. (10:55)
    • LDL is not adequate information to determine whether a statin is needed.
    • Cholesterol ratios of triglycerides/HDL are a more accurate indicator, as well as a CAC score.
    • Vinnie recommends a CAC score, even if your insurance doesn’t pay for it–it should only cost the equivalent of a few trips to a Starbucks®!
  • Vinnie asks about CAC scores: can they be reversed or stabilized once they are high? (27:30)
    • This leads to a discussion about healthy oil, seed oils, and various vitamins that can be beneficial.
  • On the flip side, some ultra athletes have calcium buildup from extended stress on the heart–Dr. Ovadia elaborates. (39:00)
    • Vinnie emphasizes that it is some ULTRA athletes, not all athletes, and it’s no excuse to not exercise!
  • They also discuss several vitamins that can benefit the heart.
    • However, Dr. Ovadia says it’s always better to avoid inflammation in the first place by eating the correct foods (like low-carb and no processed foods).
    • It’s harder to reverse any damage with vitamins if you are still eating inflammatory foods.
  • You can find Dr. Philip Ovadia on Twitter and at his website, www.ifixhearts.com.
  • His book, “Stay Off My Operation Table” can be found here.
  • PLUS… Vinnie reveals an NSNG® FOODS special  Promo Code. (LISTEN FOR IT!)
