JOY KIDDIE
- Joy has a Bachelor and Masters degree in Human Nutrition and with all her studies, she learned absolutely nothing about low carb diets!
- Her post-graduate degree was in mental health nutrition, where she published a ground-breaking study about diet and ADHD in children.
- While it wasn’t the case at the time, one of the scientists she researched with is now also low carb.
- Years later (about 5 years ago) Joy began to learn about the health benefits of LCHF diets and therapeutic ketogenic diets.
- While she’s in Canada, Canada’s dietary guidelines are based on the same research as the US dietary guidelines/
- 5 years ago, a retired physician friend came to talk to her about putting a family member on a low carb diet –– and discussions with this friend led her to a blog written by Jason Fung.
- She and Jason connected, and she learned about his approach to LCHF and keto diets, and their benefits.
- Joy used a LCHF and keto diet to lose 55 pounds and to put her own very high blood pressure type 2 diabetes and other health conditions into remission.
- She tracked her own progress as she would a patient’s and you can read about her journey here: https://www.lchf-rd.com/a-dietitians-journey/
- When she was about ½ way through her own weight loss, she was told she was too fat to counsel others as a dietician. At that point she had been studying the literature about LCHF diets and using them successfully with her clients for 3 years. Joy believes that what makes her competent to counsel others, despite not having completed her own weight loss yet was the science that LCHF and keto diets are based on, not her own body weight.
- Joy has maintained her weight loss for the last year and a half and teaches others how LCHF is easily sustainable, eating real, whole food.

THERAPEUTIC KETOGENIC DIETS
- It took Joy some time to reconcile what she had learned about saturated fats, heart disease, etc., with all of the amazing science she was reading about in the scientific literature.
- She uses ketogenic diets to treat seizure disorders, as an adjunct treatment for glioblastoma as well as for putting type 2 diabetes into remission.
- While her very first approach was very high fat and moderate protein, she now uses the full range of low carb diet approaches. She utilizes different low carb diets for different reasons, with different people. She believes there is no one-sized-fits-all low carb or keto diet. Diets for those with epilepsy, for example, will need a different approach than someone doing low carb power lifting, or seeking weight loss.
- Joy makes sure to take each individual circumstance into account in her work.
- She also supports natural periods of intermittent fasting (IF) that can be built into people’s plans.
