Welcome to Friday’s One-on-One edition of The Angriest Trainer podcast. Today, Vinnie speaks with Dr. Richard Feinman is a professor of biochemistry and medical researcher at SUNY Downstate Medical Center who studies nutrition and metabolism. He has published articles on application of thermodynamics to nutrition. His articles explain why the common idea that “a calorie is a calorie” is not correct. Listen in as Vinnie and Dr. Feinman discuss the biological results of certain diets.

THERMODYNAMICS AND LOW CARB DIETS

  • A poll was done with the Low Carbers Forum and it asked 150,000 members what they ate
  • The majority increased vegetables and leafy greens
  • As opposed the “3 B’s of Atkins”:  Bacon, beef and butter
  • Thermodynamics is the study of work, energy and heat and most nutritionists are not chemists

THE ESSENCE OF LAW 2 OF THERMODYNAMICS

  • In any real situation, energy is dissipated.  Things don’t balance out
  • Energy does not balance out.
  • If you try to lower your cholesterol by eating less cholesterol, the body will make more cholesterol

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT

  • Have to do something drastic
  • A 2-year study by Foster says it doesn’t matter how much protein, fats or carbs you take in…calorie in/calorie out is what matters
  • There is no reference to the amounts that were eaten or the amount of micronutrients

DIABETES

  • Type 1 there is no insulin; Type 2 is insulin resistant and the pancreas is deteriorating
  • Type 2 can very often be controlled by diet and does not need insulin
  • Insulin is actually contraindicated due to the person’s insulin resistance
