DR. TRO KALAYJIAN

  • Tro is a doctor
    • Ivy League med guy
  • Used to have to tell people to lose weight
  • He, however, was 350 lbs himself
    • A little over 5’11”
  • Always a hard conversation for both parties
    • Shame on both sides
  • His colleagues were the most judgmental
  • He didn’t know how he ended up so heavy
  • He is a low carb guy
    • Has had great NSNG success himself
    • Has lost over 145 lbs!!!
  • Specialties in obesity, diabetes, nutrition

NUTRITION EDUCATION

  • Tro did med school, 3 years of training for internal medicine
  • In the whole of med school, they maybe spent a week on nutrition education
    • WHILE they’re learning a bunch of other things
  • On average, med schools only spend 25 hours of nutrition
    • Nothing compared to anything else
    • They spend 500 hours covering most other subjects in med school
  • The nutrition consultations that he did give, he’d say “cut sugar and fat, go see a nutritionist”, and that was it
    • Like throwing gas at a fire
  • If a doctor with the best, very extensive, education can’t figure out why HE is fat, that’s a problem

HUNGER AND SATIETY

  • Hunger is the missing link in nutrition
  • Tro would eat and eat and never be full
  • Really, only low carb people talk and analyze hunger, which is great
  • This is a hormonal thing
    • Grelin and leptin control your hunger
  • Many people get fat because they eat because they’re always hungry!
  • Sugars and certain oils mess with satiety
    • Hence, more sugar you get, you’ll get hungrier
  • Gum chewing releases hormones and opens up your stomach and you’ll want to eat more
  • Our livers are not sophisticated enough to tell the difference between real and fake sugar
    • Diet soft drinks are BAD!
  • Hopefully more people will get on the low carb wagon and consider the importance of these hormones
    • Dietitians and nutritionists are the first step
