DR. MARK GOULSTON

  • Dr. Goulston is a psychiatrist.
  • Vinnie was recently on his podcast, and he was recently on this show before.
  • Check out his website here: https://markgoulston.com/
  • None of Dr. Goulston’s patients have killed themselves.
    • He practices and preaches surgical empathy.
  • Keep those who struggle company until they do not need it.
    • Keep them company when they feel hopeless and tell them you hear their pain.
      • We can do this with the ones we love.
  • Ask people what upset them the most that day and support them.
    • This is also a great way to help your teenagers.
      • Ask them which emotion they felt, then asking them how MUCH of that they felt.
        • Making them express this feeling rather than imagine it can really help them.
  • Letting people talk things out without jumping down their throat without providing a solution helps many.
    • They may cry –– don’t jump in to shut them down, let them get through it.
  • Check in with your loved ones every day with this process.

MASKING PAIN

  • Lots of women talk about not being able to find their warmth and provide it to their kids.
  • Many parents are trying to just keep the train on the rails.
  • The kids want the warmth that their moms try to provide (but may not be able to because they carry heavy burdens).
    • Instead, kids turn to comfort foods.
      • Food is a blanket for so many––children and adults alike.
  • Food is a way many try to make the pain go away for the time-being.
  • This does not work long term.
  • Getting healthier can improve your mental health.
